The 2006 Kentucky Derby consisted of a field of 20 colts that were considered by most experts to be one of the most evenly balanced groups in the history of the famous classic. The magnificent BARBARO entered the race with an undefeated record on both dirt and turf. At the end of the grueling mile-and-a-quarter test, BARBARO glided across the finish line a remarkable 6-1/2 lengths ahead of his closest rival. This was the greatest margin of victory since Triple Crown winner ASSAULT, 60 years before. Following the resounding triumph, numerous authorities and a vast group of horse racing fans across the United States and the world believed that BARBARO was the Triple Crown champion we've been waiting for since AFFIRMED last earned the title back in 1978. The handsome colt entered The Preakness as the heavy favorite. His army of fans collectively held their breath, waiting for history to be made, but were heart broken as the great colt took a bad step early in the race, severely injuring his right hind leg, which ended the career and threatened the life of the beloved star. BARBARO was immediately shipped to The New Bolton Center in Philadelphia,PA, where the brilliant staff, headed by Dr. Dean Richardson, did everything possible to save him, but sadly, there was just too much going against the wonderful colt. The image of his gallant fight to survive will live in the hearts of both race fans and the many thousands of others who were enthralled by this equine marvel for generations, as will his magnificent Derby victory. BARBARO'S strength and intelligence allowed him to survive far longer than a merely average horse, as he was indeed a special and brilliant star. Long live the memory of this king of the turf.

This exceptional champion, a grandson of the fabled Man O' War, was truly one of the greatest horses to ever grace the American turf. He was able to overcome every obstacle that came his way and emerged as the world's leading money winner of his day and became a true national hero. His victory over the superb Triple Crown winner, War Admiral, in their fabled match race was one of racing's most electrifying moments. Of course, his triumph in the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap, after having what many believed a career-ending injury, gave his incredible story a magical ending. 

"MEMORIES OF JUSTIN" depicts the artist's concept of a Morgan stallion that clearly bears the stamp of the legendary father of his breed. With a handsome head, large, expressive eyes, small, well shaped ears, a beautifully arched neck, sturdy conformation, clean, sound legs, topped off with a heavy, full mane and tail, this magnificent individual is a true example of this great American breed.
